Voting For War

Where do you see yourself in five years?

It is a simple question, right? I mean, most of my peers are in college, so I expect their and my answer to be similar. We will probably be starting our first job after undergrad or we will be attending graduate school.
Right now, the United States government is debating on whether or not they should use military airstrikes in Syria. It is a big issue. As a college student, I am not entirely aware of how extreme the situation is, so I feel like my opinion does not matter as much as other people who are more informed; however, I do know that in five years, I do not want the United States to be at war with Syria or any other country.

Reading different articles online, I have noticed how the general public, or most people that have access to a computer, do not like the idea of the United States government using military action on Syria. Polls were conducted by Huffington Post and they show numbers that suggest the majority of people do not want our government to use military airstrikes. They used the numbers from different website’s polls that ask the same, general question: Do you want the United States using military airstrikes against Syria?
Because the polls were on different websites and many people look at different websites for their world news, these numbers should demonstrate what the majority of people want, but what about the rest of the country?
Instead of using online polls as a method for seeing what the majority of people want, should the United States government ask the public to vote? A vote that is similar to voting for the Presidential election would ultimately give the government the best indicator as to what the majority of people want.
Going to war is a big deal, because men and women will suffer and die. Families will have to deal with relatives being killed in war, so why do a small number of people get to decide the fate of others they have never met or will know? I personally believe we should not go to war, but like the thousands of comments on articles pertaining to this issue, my voice and opinion will go unheard by the men and women in the government. The United States government will probably conduct military airstrikes, and five years from now, I may be in Syria.
